Crêpes History

In Brittany, on the West coast of France, Crêpes are enjoyed at any meal- breakfast, lunch, dinner, or as a snack. Traditional crepes are always soft and thin. Many fillings can be added, but simplicity is key.

The Crepe is made with milk and eggs is occasionally flavored with rum or brandy (how much of these is added depends on the Chef!).

The origin of the Crêpe is ancient; they have been eaten in various forms of over 9,000 years.

Originally, they were found in many areas of Europe, and were made with many different grains, such as rice, wheat, corn and etc.

Some say a woman who accidentally spilled some porridge on a stone in the fireplace created the crepe. She discovered that it cooked quickly, was easy to roll, and tasted delicious! (The best recipes are often from mistakes).

Historically, the Crêpe was eaten daily, as bread is now eaten. The first Crepe recipe is found in France about 1930, in the book "Manger de Paris".

"Crêpes" become very popular in Brittany. "Creperies", restaurant specializing in Crepe making, have existed only since the beginning of this century. In 1965 Quimper was named capital by a reputable journalist. Since this time, Creperies have become popular throughout France, and have become famous as a symbol of French cuisine.
